Ask three tailors what a blouse costs and you will get three numbers and a shrug. None of them are wrong. Stitching is priced on labour, and labour depends on the garment, the finish and the deadline. Here is what families in the GTA and across Canada typically pay, and what actually moves the number.
A simple saree blouse usually lands between 40 and 90 dollars. Lining, princess cuts, deep back designs or piping push it toward the top of that range; a padded or heavily structured blouse can pass 100.
A kurta or a simple kameez with salwar or palazzo typically runs 60 to 120 dollars for stitching alone. Churidar sleeves, heavy necklines and full lining add cost. A lehenga is the widest range of all: a blouse plus a flared skirt with a finished hem starts around 150 and climbs past 400 when there are many panels, can-can layers or hand-finished edges.
Alterations are their own economy: taking in a kameez usually costs 15 to 40 dollars, re-fitting a blouse 25 to 60. When a piece is only one size away from your naap, an alteration is almost always cheaper than new stitching.
Fabric behaviour matters more than fabric price. Chiffon, georgette and silk slip and fray, so they take longer at the machine than cotton, and time is the bill. Embellishment is the other multiplier: anything stitched over embroidery has to be unpicked and re-set by hand.
Deadlines cost money everywhere. Wedding season books tailors out weeks ahead, and a rush order pays a rush premium, often 25 to 50 percent. The cheapest order is the one placed a month early.
