The measurements, and how to take them

Use a soft tape over thin clothing. Give body measurements only; the tailor adds ease for the style you choose.

Waist (where the skirt sits): Around the point where you will actually tie the lehenga, usually just below the natural waist. Tie a string there first if you are unsure, let it settle as you move, and measure over it. This one decision changes both the waist girth and the length, so fix the tying point before you measure anything else.
Hips: Around the fullest part of the seat, feet together, tape level. The skirt must pass over this to sit at your waist, so the number decides whether you get a side zip, a drawstring, or both. If your hip is much larger than your tying-point waist, say so; the tailor will plan the opening accordingly.
Lehenga length: From the tying point straight down to the floor, wearing the heels you plan to wear. Most fall between 100 and 110 cm. Measure without shoes only if you will wear flats, and have a helper read the tape at the floor; leaning forward to read it yourself shortens the number by a centimetre or two.
Waist to hip depth: Down the side from the tying point to the fullest hip line, typically 18 to 23 cm. It tells the tailor where the skirt can start to flare so the yoke area lies smooth over the hip instead of breaking early.
Blouse set: The lehenga blouse uses the full saree blouse list: bust, underbust, upper chest, shoulder, armhole, sleeve, bicep, blouse length and neck depths. Take them in the same session as the skirt numbers, wearing the bra you will wear on the day; the blouse guide walks through each one.
Ghera (flare), a choice not a measurement: Tell the tailor how much twirl you want rather than a number: a simple A-line runs around 2.5 to 3 metres at the hem, a full flared lehenga 3.5 to 4.5, and a heavy bridal kali skirt can pass 6. More ghera means more fabric, more weight and a higher price, so it is a budget decision as much as a style one.

Mistakes that ruin the fit

Measuring length barefoot and then wearing 8 cm heels; the front hem drags and gets stepped on.
Giving the natural waist when you tie the skirt lower.
Forgetting that heavy borders cannot be shortened without losing the border; length mistakes are expensive on a lehenga.
Ignoring the weight of the finished skirt. Heavy embroidery plus can-can pulls the waist down a centimetre or two in wear, so tell the tailor how heavy the work will be and let them plan the waistband for it.
Measuring the skirt numbers and the blouse numbers weeks apart. Take the whole set in one session so the outfit is cut for one body on one day.
Skipping the underskirt. A lehenga worn over a can-can or petticoat sits differently than over bare skin; wear on the day what you wore to measure.

Common questions

What lehenga length for 5'4"?

Tied at the lower waist and worn with mid heels, most 5'4" (163 cm) frames need about 102 to 106 cm. The reliable way is to measure yourself from tying point to floor in the shoes you will wear.

Can a lehenga be altered if it does not fit?

The waist can usually go in or out a few centimetres. Length is the hard one: shortening from the hem eats the border, and lengthening is rarely possible. Get the length right first.

What is ghera or flare?

The circumference of the hem, a style choice rather than a body measurement. More kalis or panels give more flare and more twirl, along with more fabric and a heavier skirt.

Drawstring or zip at the waist?

A drawstring forgives a few centimetres of change and suits heavy skirts; a side zip with a hook gives a cleaner line under a fitted blouse. Many tailors combine a partial zip with a drawstring so the skirt is both neat and adjustable. Ask what suits the weight of your fabric.

Should the lehenga be lined, and does lining change my measurements?

Line any skirt in net, organza or heavy embroidery; the lining carries the weight and stops scratching. Your body measurements do not change, but lining adds to the fabric bill, so confirm it is in the quote.

Can I order a lehenga from a tailor in another city?
